It has a lot to do with cutting. A carat is a weight, not really a size. One carat equals one fifth of a gram but when people look at diamonds and describe one as being ‘bigger’ than another, they’re usually referring to diameter, not weight. A flat 5/8ct. can have a bigger diameter than a deep ¾ct.


This may seem like you would want the flattest diamond possible because it would have a bigger surface area that way but, unfortunately, you're trading off brilliance and scintillation when you do this. Miss the right proportions by what seems like just a little bit in either direction and you're trading beauty for size.


It's sort of like Goldilocks’s porridge – It needs to be just right.
