Strange Setting

My fiancee gave me an heirloom ring. It has a setting that I have never seen before. The accent diamonds are set down into grooves on the side, with no prongs. However there seems to be a VERY small protrusion from the sides holding each of them in. Does anybody know anything about this particular setting, and the time frame in which it was used?r7.jpg

Sorry, terrible pic

It may be what we call tick set.. Generally the stones are put in a channel that is slightly too wide for the stones and then a very small amount of metal is pushed over to hold the stones in place.. It's more common in mass produced jewelry, but I have seen it used all over the place in a lot of rings..
