Hi ALl!

I agree with Judah that the company you asked about has a very good reputation.

But there's a lot more to look at when one is purchasing a diamond.

For example, would you not want to see an actual photo of the diamond you are considering?

Did you realize that the company you're thinking about never even sees the diamond they are trying to sell you?

In addition to a reputation, these things seem to be important to me.....

Here's a digital photo of a diamond....

It is very interesting to learn that there are people out there that are in the diamond buying process on the internet that never heard about bluenile. It looks like we still have a chance to be on the top, what do you think.

Hi Everyone,

It's important to note that buying a diamond involves a lot of visual aspects- and again- Blue Nile does not know what the diamonds they are offering look like.

Clearly, a lot of folks have had good experience there ( even if none have come here to add a note)- BUT- if you are here looking, it's possible to show you that you can purchase in a much more informed manner.

I don't understand the little side conversations that you're having between dealers. Why are you doing this on the forum instead of by private email? As a novice who is trying to learn about diamonds on this forum, I am instantly and highly suspicious of you who are making cute little secret comments to each other. Another couple of companies I can write off of my list of potential sources...

Take a chill, Ty.

Nothing "secret" about this. Very clear to everyone that this just some very open, transparent good-natured banter between two very nice, professional, and reputable guys in our Industry.

And insofar as you being a "novice" weeding out 'potential companies', your comments and participation on another diamond forum indicate that you are anything but.

Enjoy your Tiffany Ring.

Uh, Barry, I don't know what you're talking about, but most importantly, neither do you. I came here to begin to get some leads on internet purchases. I was unimpressed with the silly chatter, and in other threads the bickering among dealers; should be taken off line. Thought so then, think so now. Sorry to blow a hole in your little conspiracy theory, but I don't own, nor have I ever owned or purchased a tiffany ring. Maybe you should spend your time more wisely sniffing out clues from the recently released JFK documentation... Suggest you get your facts straight before you fire off some ill conceived BS opinions.

HI tycobb2522,

I believe that banter between dealers, on an open forum like this, can benefit consumers greatly. We all have different opinions about things, and luckily, this forum has some very well advised professionals who devote their time helping consumers.

Barry is certainly among the best that I know. Sometimes he and I disagree, but his opinion is always well advised, and always given with the best of intentions.

Try to understand, that some of the dealers here know each other, yet we no idea at all who you are. That doesn't mean you're not welcome to air your opinion, it's just that there have been cases of people who came on here and who weren't what they seem to be.

Again, I'm sure this has nothing to do with you, I hope you enjoy whatever ring you ended up buying.

Thanks, and I'm still looking. Just FYI, I appreciate the discourse between dealers, it's just that the little side conversation I addressed was annoying, and in my opinion, brought nothing to the table. Again, just my opinion. I have gained a lot of insight from the dealers talking among themselves, it's just when they get personal, or senslessly babble, nobody benefits. But hey, I don't run this forum, so I'll keep my thoughts to myself.

And speaking of getting personal, I take exception to vitriolic and false accusations; that's personal, and I won't tolerate them from anyone. Wish I could afford a Tiffany ring, but alas, I'm looking at 1C at Blue Nile...

Anyway, thanks, and by the way, I just accidently deleted a personal email from somebody on this board. Whoever sent it is welcome to resend.

I've never bought from Blue Nile, but I have looked around at diamonds and settings a few times. From what I have read on other sites and forums, they have a pretty solid return policy, and I honestly have never heard anything bad about them. I can't speak from experience, though, since I myself haven't purchased from them.

Wow, I didn't realize how old this thread was! I just assumed it was recent...I should start looking at dates now, heh.

So I read most of the following posts after the opener. I am considering getting a diamond on blue nile and I am concerned about how I can't see the stone first. They do have a 30 day return policy, during which time I could look at it and take it in to get appriased I suppose. As a first time diamond buyer, should this buy me any comfort? Also very nice is that, as it will be shipped to Washington DC, it seems as though I will not be charged sales tax on the purchase. It seems almost too good to be true. Anyone care to wake me up to some reality I'm missing?

Oh, by the way, this is the diamond I am looking at buying: $6028; 1.14 c round, Ideal-cut, H-color, and VS2-clarity, Sym: Ex, Pol: Ex. Gird: thin to med; flour: faint ----- it seems to be a decent deal form what I've seen, but I'm looking to see what others think. Thanks!

Reality #1: even though the retailer will not charge you state sales tax, all states that charge sales tax also have a "use tax" for out-of-state purchases. In theory the purchase should be declared and the appropriate tax paid. In practice, many evade.

The Blue Nile model works - otherwise they would not be as big as they are. Personally, I don't think it's the best one, particularly for someone who wants "the best" or for someone who is looking for something out of the ordinary.

"Ideal cut" in this case is a misnomer. Bear in mind that Blue Nile does not stock anything and never sees any stone. They simply act as intermediary between the buyer and the cutter/manufacturer. Their assessment on cut is done purely on the information available on the grading report, which is totally insufficient to do anything except reject the most obvious duds.
