EGL? European Gemological Laboratory

At best, it's a distant 3rd place. You can sometimes use EGL paper to compare to other EGL paper but even that is problematic because there are several different labs using that name and they are not equally reliable and because there is so much important information that isn't included on the report. It's effectively the same as a dealer graded stone. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact it's to be encouraged, but you should ignore it unless you would you otherwise be inclined to trust grading from your dealer.

Both EGL's are considerably bigger than AGS. The size of the lab isn't what your looking for, it's the reliability.

GIA is the gold standard. AGS as well. Sometimes we buy a diamond for our inventory that has an EGL. So, in other words, we're hand picking a diamond because it's drop dead gorgeous, and we're not holding the EGL report against it. But we can't usually sell the diamond at what we'd sell a GIA diamond for.

Diamond prices are based on the color, clarity, cut, carat weight. So that's why the lab report comes into question. If it's a lab that does questionable grading, then you don't know what you're getting. You don't know if what you're paying is fair, in other words.

Pookabean, you did not hold the report you had against the diamond you loved. It spoke to you and you're happy with it. But it doesn't always turn out that way. Because often sellers use labs that are not reputable to act like you're getting a great deal when you're not.

I think when pookabean said "you're buying a diamond, not a report" is a key point and a really good one. Trust in the seller is paramount.
