diamonds turned yellow

last year my husband bought me a ring from a very reputable jewelry store. the description is this: 14 carat gold band, three diamonds in a platinum setting. I lost the ring. 8 monthsd later the ring was found. in the lint trap of my washer. we are on our own well. there is alot of calcium in our water. the setting is three stones in a row. the middle stone stayed clear, the two outside ones turned yellow? What could have made this happen? are they not real? or my fear for my husband is that the store sold him cubic zurconium? and if they are what can we do?

Hi,

Sounds like the ring needs a professional cleaning.

I have seen and heard of diamonds being discolored by the minerals in well water.

It is extremely unlikely that the store would say they gave you diamonds and actually give you something else.

If the diamonds were white previously there is really nothing that can permanetely 'yellow' them except something stuck to the surface of the diamonds which can be cleaned off.

Don't worry, bring the ring in, you might have to leave it for a day or two to allow for an extended & thourough cleaning process.

I think I remember hearing a similar story about minerals getting stuck to a diamond and turning it another color. In the case I recall (clearly it's not frequent) the stone was turned temporarily brownish yellow and dull. In this case the people were on well water and the professional buffing/cleaning worked. I am no water chemical specialist by any stretch and I don't know if that is the case with yours but I do remember the scenario because it was so unusual.

Good Luck and please come back and let us know in case someone else has this issue in the future. Just consider that your community service for preventing dirty diamond panic syndrome. (I made that last malady up.)
