Can you get a deal at christmas time?

Hi, I'm the webmistress at Diamonds by Lauren and involved in the marketing side of the business.

The diamond market fluctuates all year round. One thing you need to be careful of is trying to hard to find a "deal". With diamonds, you are rarely comparing apples and apples. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Most reputable online dealers have a competitive price structure. You should find what dealer you like and trust--then work from there.

I would suggest buying now instead of December 18th since it is VERY busy that time of year.

This is the busiest time of year for jewelers. Don't know exactly what you mean by a "Deal"? If it's too good to be true, then run, don't walk away.

Do your homework, work with reputable vendors that have clearly stated Return and upgrade Policies and sell quality merchandise. In diamonds, Cut quality of the stone is paramount; the better the Cut, the whiter and cleaner it will face up.

After sale customer service is equally important. Do you get a Lifetime Guarantee on the engagement ring setting? Re-sizing?

Sure. As mentioned above, Christmas season is a big deal for jewelers and they will generally increase their inventory going into the season. This means that your selection improves although they do tend to get busy and so the personal attention sometimes drops. The prices stay about the same all year with the biggest contributor to short term fluctuations being the foreign currency markets. (diamonds aren't keyed into US dollars so the strength or weakness of the dollar can come into play.

When is the best time to buy an engagement ring? Right before you plan to get engaged.

I think there will be plenty of diamonds available then. If you are planning on having something custom made, you need to get started right at the 2007 New Year. That process can take 6-8 weeks depending on what it is you are shopping for and what's being done. If, you will be looking for a diamond to be set in a solitaire, it won't take nearly that long.
