A carat is a measure of weight. It's 1/5 of a gram. It boils down to how accurate a scale is being used to make the measurement. I've worked with scales that can go to 4 decimal places, which is accurate enough to weight a fingerprint or a speck of dust. For most jewelry applications 2 digits of accuracy is sufficient.
