how can you tell if a diamond is genuine

Recommended Posts

Take it to an appraiser. If shopping look for a stone with a GIA or AGS lab report. Also check to see if the stone is laser inscribed with the lab report number on the girdle. Work with someone reputable and you should have no problem.

If you grind the suspected stone into a fine powder, burn it, and examine the flame through a spectroscope you will notice that CZ has some distinctive properties in the ultraviolet range.

There are other less distructive tests available as well. Most jewelers and appraisers can tell you fairly quickly and will do so for free if you show them the stone.
