Thoughts on this 2.7 D SI1 XXX Round Stone?

Recommended Posts

I’m buying from a family friend jeweler who is charging ~$30,000 for this including the setting.

Eye clean to me, but am a first time buyer.

Questions:

Am I overpaying?

How much different would a vvs1 stone look with all other characteristic of the stone the same?

any other matters to look out for?

It doesn't seem like you are. Here are a few similar stones, and they are all priced comfortably above $30k. However, as always the devil is in the detail, and with SI clarity in particular the details matter a lot.

That depends on the visibility of the inclusions in the SI1. There will be no impact from those on sparkle/brightness/fire, but if e.g. the knot distorts the pattern symmetry or the crystals are dark and easily visible then it may be bothersome; the only way of knowing is by seeing the stone. The VVS1 would also cost twice as much, but that won't be visible except on your bank balance.

There are reasons why this particular stone is fairly heavily discounted: the large knot under the table, the fluorescence and the cut proportions are all perceived as 'risky' and make the stone more difficult to sell than average. It doesn't mean that the diamond won't look nice, and even less that you won't like it. It will be hard to resell, so if you are planning upgrades down the road this may be restrictive.

I would suggest you take a look (in person, if possible, but good quality comparative videos taken with both diamonds side by side are also good) at other stones to decide if the trade-offs presented by this one are acceptable for you - there is no right or wrong, but there are definitely stones that you will like more and those you will like less.

SI1>VVS1 without changing other things will roughly double your price. The look will depend on other things, like cutting and what exactly caused the SI1 grade. As always, Davide summarized it well.
