There is no way anyone can ID a stone via a photograph; I would take any such ID - no matter who offers it - with a huge pinch of salt. Take it to a gemmologist, and they should be able to confirm (or not) very quickly.

As a DIY alternative, if you have a precision scale (precision depending on the size of the stone, but at least 1% of its weight, ideally 0.1%), you can rig up something like this:

though much less refined, and this will give you an indication of specific gravity thus confirming/denying the hypothesis.
