Hello, I want to know if I don’t pay over price for my ring. I bought a ring from Michael Hill, Australia

last December 2016. And I want to know all about this ring

shape/cut: Round Brilliant

measurement: 6.44 - 6.41 x 4.00

weight: 1k

color grade: I

clarity grade: I1

polish/ symmetry: very good/ good

cut grade: Excellent

treatment: none

I purchased $9,014 AU

this is a 18k white gold and 1k diamond

Hi Grace,

Welcome to DiamondReview!

I'm afraid that yours is a question that is impossible precisely to answer without seeing the ring.

A few additional pieces of information are also needed even to get an approximate answer -

1. When you say "1 carat diamond", does that mean 1.00 or 0.95? Both can be described as "1 carat", but there will be a significant difference in price.

2. Who has graded the diamond I/I1? I suspect it's not GIA or AGS (or HRD, or many other labs), because GIA or AGS would not issue a cut grade of "Excellent" with "Good" symmetry, and frankly this casts a big shadow of doubt about colour and clarity grading too.

3. Is there any information about fluorescence on the report?

4. Is the setting a plain solitaire, or is it a more elaborate design? Could you post a photo of it? If there are other diamonds, is the weight of "1 carat" total weight, or just of the centre stone?

(All of this said, assuming for a moment that grading is accurate, the stone is a full carat and the ring is a plain solitaire, you at best paid a premium compared to what you could have spent - at worst you got gouged: the most expensive 1 carat I/I1 (GIA) currently retailed on the Diamond Finder is less than AUD 6,000 including 10% GST and a plain 18kt white gold setting is not going to cost AUD 3,000 from a reasonably competitive dealer. The real problem is that the cheapest I/I1 is less than AUD 2,500 incl. GST, and if the grading or weight assumptions are wrong, for an I2 or 0.9x the price could be even lower)

Thank you davidelevi for the answer of all my questions and I send you the picture of the ring, this is a round diamond weight no less than 1.00ct. Hallmarked.

The GSI report is not reliable, but since they graded it I1 this leaves (I think) greater uncertainty on colour and cut than clarity. The diamond is a full carat, so no concerns there.

Depending on what the diamond is really like (do the inclusions affect transparency and sparkle? Is it cut decently, just with a thick girdle?), you may have overpaid a little or a lot; you certainly didn't pay a super-competitive price. Unfortunately, there is not much else that I can say without seeing the diamond.

(BTW - don't worry about not disclosing the report number: there is no way anyone can link that report number to you; even if GSI were to release their records - which they will not - the details there will be of the jeweller or diamond cutter who commissioned and paid for the report, not yours!)

Thank you very very much, I appreciate all your help for me ..

even I am very disappointed at least I learned. I just thinking to go to there store and ask about the ring Now I know they

give me the cheapest stone with the same price of the good one. It breaks my heart cause this is the present for myself

and I though I choose the best one.
