  1. Thanks I wasn't sure if it was going to all light correctly and spell it out, but it worked well. I kept the ring in the box so I wouldn't drop it lol. If anyone wants to skip right to the sign and not watch the whole video it's at 1 min and 35 seconds.

Here are a couple of pics she took. Not the greatest pics, but you get the idea. She was very happy and i'm happy she liked what I picked. Thanks everyone for the information and help

Last night I popped the question using fireworks. Here's the link to the thread with the link to my video (i wasn't sure if or how to embed it in the post). I still need to take a picture of the completed ring and post it. http://www.diamond.info/forum/index.php?showtopic=5645
  4. Last night I asked my girlfriend to marry me. I do small consumer fireworks shows for friends and family on the 4th of july each year so I thought I would try something new and ask my girlfriend to marry me with fireworks and it actually worked I'm not sure how to or if it's possible to embed the video directly from youtube so here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK3-USFT_9A

UPDATE 1: The diamond got back and is being mounted as we speak so I should have the ring in hand tomorrow, but I have the GIA report (stats below). I'm overall very happy and probably pretty lucky it worked out and I think I got a pretty good deal by comparing it to the jamesallen prices on similar VS1/G diamonds (it came back as a VS1 instead of VVS1 like was listed in the store and possibly on the appraisal they received when they got the estate piece which isn't saying much.) Including tax and GIA report the diamond cost me $1859. I'll post a picture of the completed ring probably after I give it to her Sunday unless I get a chance when she's not around in the next couple of days. Report Type: GIA Diamond Dossier® Date of Issue: February 12, 2010 Laser Inscription Registry: GIA 5111416729 Round Brilliant Measurements: 5.91 - 6.02 x 3.59 mm Carat Weight: 0.79 carat Color Grade: G Clarity Grade: VS1 Cut Grade: Very Good Proportions: Depth: 60.2% Table: 62% Crown Angle: 36.0° Crown Height: 14.0% Pavilion Angle: 41.0° Pavilion Depth: 43.0% Star length: 50% Lower Half: 85% Girdle: Thin to Medium, Polished (3.0%) Culet: Small <H2>Finish: Polish: Very Good Symmetry: Good Fluorescence: Faint <H2>Clarity Characteristics: Needle, Cloud </H2> </H2> <H2 class=h2black> </H2>

She will have absolutely no clue until Feb 20th (when I plan on giving it to her) unless it's not back from GIA and mounted yet. I hope it is or I need to make other plans lol. I've made up an excuse so that it's after valentines day so she shouldn't suspect anything. I'll post a picture once it's mounted along with the GIA info. Which will hopefully be in a couple of weeks. I actually had fun shopping for it and picking out what I liked (and hopefully she'll love) and I absolutely hate shopping.

Update: They're sending the diamond to GIA today. Once she removed it from the previous mounting I looked at it again under the scope and still liked what I saw. There is a hint of color, but I saw way worse while shopping around, but not sure where it's going to fall on the chart. Time will tell. She weighed it 4 times also while I was there and said they went by the appraisal when they got the estate piece and that it's from the 50's so she was curiuos what it would actually be and it weighed .79. Overall i'm happy with the price being an estate piece, the overall look, the help that they gave at the store, and I chose the mounting that I wanted to go with it. I'll report back again once and post a picture once everything is back and mounted. Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for all the help. I had looked at a sizing chart online before I had gone to the store looking for diamonds so I had an idea of what the chart said the diameter in mm's would be. At the store I had her measure the diamond since we were looking for a setting for it anyway and it was 5.9mm which would be the correct diameter for a 3/4 carat according to the chart. Even though I like it I will still always wonder if I made a good choice, but anything I ended up chosing unless it was already certified I think I would feel that way since i've never purchased anything before. I suppose it shows how much I love her that I want her to have the best I can afford instead of just going out without doing any research and just buying something lol. I will most likely have it sent in for grading with or without the jewelers help. I'm going back next week to look through their catalogs to find a setting I like since they didn't have one in the store I liked so i'll bring everything up with them and see what they say. Thanks again and hopefully i'll have something good to report back on next time.

That is very true if there was a problem it could be under a prong and I had thought of that. After looking at everything at all of the jewelers I ultimately chose that one because I liked everything about it regardless of what they were rating it. I was more trusting of what I saw and liked compared to everything else I had seen. I certainly don't know much about diamonds though which is why I ask and you bring up some very good points. I never knew there was so much involved

I wasn't sure if they would pull the stone from an existing ring with those restrictions, but I suppose it can't hurt to ask. I'm unsure of the color or cut all I remember was the VVS, but I liked the look of the diamond. I suppose to have some sort of virtual comparison of price and the best look I would compare it to this one. http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS1-...ond-1271130.asp

To cut to the chase for anyone not wanting to read everything. What I’m wondering is. Is there anything I should be concerned about having a stone taken from one ring and put in another, and since it’s coming out of one would it be a good idea to have it sent to GIA for grading for my curiousity and insurance purposes? I spent this week searching four of my local non-chain jewelers looking at everything from loose diamonds, diamond rings, and estate rings. The estate rings were less expensive since they were previously owned so my reason for including them in my search was strictly for the diamonds with the intent of having it remounted. I originally thought that I only wanted eye clean, but after looking and pretty easily spotting I1’s with the naked eye and even some SI’s although she wouldn’t care I do and wanted to buy the stone I like best (she’s not involved in this at all it’s going to be a complete surprise) I figure I’m better off going with a better stone and different, but not plain band and if she wants we can change it later. At least the main stone would be something she could enjoy forever (I hope). I got comfortable dealing with one jeweler that let me look at everything I was considering through a loop and also a microscope. Which ultimately made me want to find the least included diamond I could find, but that’s really what I think I’m most comfortable purchasing anyway. After looking at everything I ended up liking a ¾ carat round VVS1 the best that was in an estate piece mounted in a simple platinum band that I plan on having taken out and mounted in something else. Is there anything I should be concerned about?

Very good advice thank you. I went to a couple of my local jewelers and having never had any interest to look at diamonds before was amazed how easy it was to spot inclusions and various color range of diamonds without a loop in many of the already mounted diamond rings that I saw. It makes it enjoyable to look for a good (to me) diamond since I have an inspection background from my earlier days inspecting small electronics. I have seen some nicer loose diamonds though.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not looking to see any of the money back that's just the way I think during other major purchases So when i'm looking at diamonds especially online what should I consider the most since I can't see it up close or should I skip online all together. I hadn't thought about making a purchase online until I found this site and looked at James Allen and they listed all the information for each of the stones for sale. That's where i'm unsure if I should choose a larger stone with a lower grade or a smaller stone with better grade. What should I use as my minimum requirements if I were to purchase a larger stone at a lower grade but still very nice. And what should I use as my minimum requirements if I were to purchase a smaller stone but higher grade for it to make it worth while over the larger stone. Or should I shoot for the middle ground between the two?
  14. First I'd like to say this is a great site! I'll be poking around trying to find my answers, but I have limited time to search because I have to sneak around and hope she doesn't see me on here. I thought starting my own thread would help me narrow my search time down and not get caught . As for things i'm familiar with I always try to balance the best I can get for what I can afford keeping in mind that if I were to ever sell it it would have to be good enough for someone to want to buy. I have no clue about diamonds and obviously I wouldn't be looking to ever sell it so i'm wondering with my limited $2k budget what I should be concerned with more? Should I go slightly larger center stone with slightly less color and clarity or should I go better color and clarity and smaller stone? With my budget it looks like i'm guessing i'm looking for around a .5 carat center stone. I want her to be extremely happy and surprised. Her only concern is that I ask someday. She likes princess, emerald, and round if it's in a vintage looking setting but also likes other styles for the princess and emerald. I've briefly looked at one local Jeweler and James Allen online so as I look here and everywhere else I get more and more confused what I should be after Thanks in advance! KC
