I'm pretty comfortable about the
type of diamond I'll get for the engagement ring--
1 carat, round cut--but I'm indecisive on its
setting. So, here's two naieve questions.
1) Can settings be exchanged? i.e. if the gal wants
something different can a jeweler pop out the stone
and put it into a new setting. Are jewelers willing to
do this on comparably priced bands?

2) My gal and I both prefer the look of a 4-prong setting
but worry about how secure the diamond is given how
roughly she wears rings. Is this a legitimate concern or
just PR for the 6-pront designs

1. Yes

2. Six is a little safer. I would suggest insuring it, set it in 4 if you like it, and enjoy it. Do have it checked every year or better yet twice a year. I would suggest that with a six too.
