Hi,
i recently purchased a diamond as an engagement ring for my fiancee. when purchasing the diamond we were quite satisfied with the purchase in terms of overall quality. now she has left for abroad and will not see her for awhile; but talking to her just now, she has noticed a "crack" inside the diamond, about a third of a way up from the cutlet. the crack seems to be internal and cannot be seem from the top. this is not something that we had noticed before. she will be going to a jeweler where she is to have it checked out, but we fear the worst.
this is not a crack that was noticed when purchasing. it was set less than a week ago.
my question is did the crack occur naturally? what can cause this kind of a crack? is there a possibilty that the diamond could have been switched?
what are my options left for us?
thanks for any help or advice.

If it is a round diamond, it sounds like you may be describing the girdle reflecting on the side of the stone. If you look at any round diamond you will see this reflection from the side about the same area that you described.
