Chipped Diamond... its vulnerability?

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, experiences and suggestions. I came unto a problem with a diamond I'm concerned about:

My wife and I are looking at an engagement diamond with what looks like a minute chip on the girdle. The dealer offering it to us told us that "chip" was a natural (for the sake of maximizing its weight during cutting). We went to a reputable local retailer and upon inspection, the person told us it isn't a natural and chances are, if something were to bump it hard at that exact spot, the diamond is vulnerable to splitting.

Be it a natural, or not, a chip is a chip is a chip, but will the diamond still be vulnerable? Is there a way to tell if the chip is a natural or not? My wife was thinking of covering the chip up with one of the prongs when getting it mounted, but I feel it makes it even more vulnerable. Should the ring get bumped, whatever energy force it is bumped from will regardless travel to that prong. I'm not a diamond expert, but this is common sense (kudos to my physics teacher).

Thus far we are happy with this diamond, but this chip is our main concern and we won't take it if it will split... natural or not.

Does the diamond have a GIA lab report? If so, it would be noted on the report whether it is a chip or natural. Naturals usually have the original *skin* of the diamond.

I would suggest ultimately looking for another diamond that you have no reservations on and make sure you get a lab report from GIA or AGS as well so you can be assured of the correct color and clarity.

You might also want to learn more about cut grades on diamonds as well.

You can get some guideline charts for cut grades for various shapes at:

Be it if the "chip" is natural or not, will it still pose a risk that it will chip more?

To my understanding, this cleavage on the girdle will only get worse. Am I right, or does that depend whether if it is a natural or not? Thanks!

It really all deapends where the chip is
If it is on the girdle it might!as you might accidently hit your hand against somthing. If it is not on the girdle such as in the culet it might not ,as it is hiding on the bottom of the ring and has no contact with anything.but generally speaking a chip is laible to get bigger in any case.
