Is there a standard for gauging how much one should pay for a (diamond) engagement ring (in terms of one's income)? If there is, I'd appreciate someone letting me know what it is.

Well... according to DeBeers advertising, they say 2 months salary.
But I would advise you to only spend as much as you are comfortable with.
Also if you purchase from a store that has a 100% upgrade policy you could always upgrade when comfortable.
