When so many jewelers frown upon the champagne color and instinctively wrinkle their nose and roll their eyes when asked to appraise it(the dreaded brown diamond)how can a person pursue this lovely diamond without feeling like a fool? I have a .47ct unset with brilliance that is electrifying and cleaner than most mall stores provide in their whites but I feel quite alone in my "love". I paid $322.00 for this C4 gem and was told that was too much. Are there any other "brown diamond" lovers who are also expert in grading that can make me feel better about my purchase?

It sounds like a good deal to me! Especially given the fact that you are overjoyed with it. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...

Is this you, Veronica?
I am getting ready to set a quite lovely champagne diamond in an antique setting that is just perfect for its brilliance as well. I am not an expert, but I too believe the clarity and beauty of this diamond far outshines things I have seen at the mall. Also, I just wanted to tell you again how much I ADORE those little heart tsavorites you sent me. Thanks so much for parting with a few more. They are truly fabulous..

My wife has a 3 stone ring that is 2cts
all in champagne. I have to tell you that everyone who see's her ring on just love it. And you are right the way all the stones in that ring shine is fare better then all of her white diamonds. It just catches the light and looks awesome. I can't speak about the store folks because it has never been back in a store since I bought it. I can say that they thought it was better then sliced bread when I was thinking about buying it.( Ha Ha )

I just bought a 2.00ct champange diamond bracelet and I've never worn it(still has the 1800.00 price tag on it). I LOVE IT!!! I'm afraid to put it on. Due to a pending divorce I am going to have to sell it (they would have to rip it off my cold dead body). That my dear will break my heart! All my jewelery is custom made and this is just outstanding. I bought it on the advice of my jeweler (who didn't sell me this one by the way)
She is a private jeweler and said that when these catch on (like the pink & black diamonds you will be laughing all the way to the bank). She has been in the business 33yrs. and has never missed yet.

Where have you been finding your champagne diamonds? I just recently had a ring designed with champagne diamonds, and our jewlerer looked all over for them. I really wanted darker stones, but instead they are very light.

What color are yours?

thank you.

I've been in jewellery for many years and am a registered gemologist in Australia. I train others in diamonds as well. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the clarity of your stone, not having seen it, but I can give you some info on fancy browns.
I do not believe that champagne's/cognac's will ever reach the dizzying heights of pinks and the other coloureds. The simple reason for this is the economics of supply and demand. There are nowhere near as many fancy coloureds as cognac's. The Argyle mine is the largest producer of pinks in the world. They have described it to me as this:
"Every year, we get a dump truck loaded with diamonds. We'd get enough pinks to fill the ashtray in that truck".
There are so little pinks that they will always command more money than whites or fancy browns.
The reason most jewellers frown upon fancy browns is because in jewellery we are taught from the start that it is the lack of colour that makes a diamond beautiful. A lot of cognacs do have wonderful brilliance, and that makes them appealing to people.
There's a simple reason for the brilliance attributed to cognacs. They are quite often cut by master cutters, because they need to have a selling point for the diamonds. More people like the whites, so they cut the browns perfectly, so they will sell.
Diamonds are a very personal choice and you have no need to justify your choice to anyone, not even a jeweller. If you like cognacs, that is your choice. $322 is not too much for a C4 that is cut well. I think that's a very fair price. Is it an Argyle? If so, it's worth even more.
Take it to a jeweller and tell him you want it appraised. Ignore the sneers and remind yourself that YOU love it and he/she doesn't have to.

I found this message board while I was trying to find out more about champagne diamonds - and no, you're not alone in liking them. I'm now the proud owner of an engagement ring which is one champagne diamond surrounded by 8 small clear diamonds and of course being newly engaged everyone wants to see the ring - and everyone likes it. They all have to ask what the centre diamond is - because let's face it not many people have heard of them. But I love the ring - I tried a similar ring which was all clear diamonds and it looked too flashy - the single champagne diamond tones the ring down slightly and yet people still comment on how clear and 'sparkly' the ring is. I think they'll catch on as a nice alternative to a gem stone.

I also have a champagne diamond ring (.49 ct / C-1) I love it! I have found a wholesale diamond/gem outlet that has tons of natural champagnes at VERY reasonable prices .... as well as many other natural and enhanced fancy colored diamonds ..... ENJOY!

My fiance just bought me a beautiful cognac diamond ring for our engagement (per my request) It's an estate ring (circa 1952) and we've yet to have it appraised but it's supposedly VS1 .55ct, round cut in a platinum setting with 2 .03ct white diamond side stones. It's the most beautiful ring I've ever seen
He paid around $750 for it. (a good deal?)

I didn't realize that champagne diamonds were unfavorable until we bought it. I just love it though. White diamonds can be so boring and other colors, though beautiful and rare, I'm just not sure I could live with forever. Champagne is understated and neutral enough to wear with anything.

an update...

we had my ring sized an appraised finally... the center stone is actually .57ct vs C6 cognac color and side stones are each .05 vs white...

setting is 900 irid plat
appraised for $2,850!
nearly 3 times what we paid for it!

While I'd still love it no matter what it was worth, it definitely feels good to know we didn't get ripped off (the ring was bought through ebay)

The next step is to get a custom platinum wedding band made to fit my engagement ring. Wedding is planned for this August!
