A jeweler told me that if I was wanted a platinum ring because of the look then I should consider White Gold because of several reason: 1) Platinum scratches easily and gets dull quicker 2) White Gold is less expensive.
What is the difference betwen White Gold and Platinum?

I heard the same thing. Where was the jeweler you talked to? If it's a mall jeweler, they say that because they don't have the equipment to take care of the platinum. Chicago is bound to have more than a few platinum smiths that work at better jewelers.
What was explained to me was that, with the right equipment and knowing what they are doing, platinum can be made to look like new. White gold may need to be dipped to maintain its color, and can contain nickle. It's softer, too. Plus, when you polish gold, you wear gold away. With platinum, you wear a very small amount away; the metal reworks itself to remove the scratches.
Some may dispute this, but that's what I've heard from a couple places. The only places recommending not going with platinum were mall type jewelers.
