I am looking to purchase a new diamond and the two I am looking at are EGL certified. I an told that the European standard is different and considered to be of lower standard. Is this true and should I stay away from these diamonds?

EGL uses the same scales/system as GIA does, so it is not a different standard.
I have also heard they can be a bit more liberal in their grading, and the consensus seems to be AGS is the strictest, then GIA, then EGL, then IGI. But that is only based on talk, not personal experience. I have not personally seen liberal grading from EGL with any diamonds we have sent to them for grading (though these are fancy yellow synthetic diamonds and EGL is known for expertise in colored diamonds, not whites), they have been pretty strict in our experience.
You might ask the jeweler if they will send it to GIA or AGS if you are willing to pay the expense of getting it graded and the time delay if it is of great concern to you. But overall, I think EGL has quite competent gemologists and an EGL report is valid.
Note: I'd be interested in other jewelers experience between the labs since we are on this topic.

Well not exactly... They also use SI3 which neither AGS or GIA use.
In my experience, the last stone that I examined would have been graded much differently had it went to GIA.
I seen as much as 2-3 grades variance from the stricter laboratories such as GIA or AGS.
I would stick with a stone graded by the GIA or AGS laboratories.
