i'm thinking of buying a 3 stone engagement ring (all round diamonds). what side stone carat weight will look best next to an approx 0.85 carat center diamond? thanks

Hi there,
I don't know if its the 'best', but our rule of thumb on three stone rings is to stick with either a 3:1 or 2:1 proportions.

Thus, for a .85ct center, either use something around .45ct (approx. 2:1) for the sides or .30ct (3:1).

Obviously, you don't need to be exactly 3:1 or 2:1 but in that range will ensure you get a nice proportional flow to the eye.

If you want to really emphasize the center stone, then go with 3:1 ratio, if you want more emphasis on the ring as a whole (all three stones) then try the 2:1 ratio.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your ring!

Best regards,
Less

Moflo;

I'd agree with Less on this: Stick with either a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio.

Also, keep in mind that you want all three diamonds to have a
uniform and symmetrical look.
If you go for an Ideal-Cut center, make
sure the sides are also Ideal,
especially if you're going with a 2:1 ratio. Otherwise the mediocre-cut
sides will detract from your center.

If you want your 3-stone to really razzle-dazzle, then "cut" is the most important of the 'C's'!

We've made many 3 stone rings with a center stone of that size. Most of our clients have gone with about a .25 ct. on the sides.

BTW I happen to wear one myself :) My center stone is a 1.50 ct. with .50 ct. side stones. :)

There is no ratio to go by. Have the jeweler lay out different
combos and you tell him .
