GIA is a laboratory not an appraiser. You will notice that on the GIA lab report there are no prices.
They are the standard for gemological information as well as grading. They are the ones that invented the grading system that so many others misuse.
Get a stone with a GIA or AGS lab report and then get it appraised independently.

Sorry,
I realized I had made the mistake as soon as I hit "post". But the basic question still remains: How does EGL compare? I had seen your recommendation with regard to GIA but the company I am considering buying from uses EGL. Is that a reason for concern? Thanks

I have found in my experiences that EGL is sometimes about 2-3 grades different than GIA in color and clarity.
I think it really stems from the fact that they are using *their* grading system which is different.
You will note that they even have a SI3 clarity grade that GIA and AGS don't use. I find their color grading not as stringent as well.
I have stopped handling stones with their reports, because we always guaranteed that the stones that we handle, would grade out at GIA, but to my dismay, more times than not, postage was wasted returning stones to the cutter that didn't meet the criteria for us.
