Is there any experts out there that knows if there is a such thing as a perfectly cut diamond? Or a maker?

Hi there,
I don't think anyone could quantify a specific diamond as being 'perfect' in the same way that you couldn't get agreement on what does a 'perfect' beautiful woman look like :-)

There is general agreement as to a general range of cutting standards that should optimize a diamonds light return (I'm talking about rounds, where the most research has been done) but even there you will have H&A cut vs. EightStar cut, for example. I personally am a huge fan of H&A (hearts and arrows) cuts which basically means all of the facets are in perfect symmetry, indicating that the light return is being optimized as compared to a regular ideal.

From top down, I would rate:
1)H&A or Eightstar
2)AGS-000
3)Ideal cut
4)commercial round brilliant

as being the ranking for how perfectly cut a diamond is, and expect to pay more the higher you climb the above scale, because you are paying for extra cutting time and extra weight loss (i.e. a .80ct H&A could have been a 1.00ct ideal cut for example, so the cutter has to trade off beauty vs. finished carat weight).

You might want to take a look at brilliancescope reports on any diamond you are thinking about, as this is what many people (but certainly not all) consider the most objective way to determine a diamond cuts 'beauty'. Goto www.superbcert.com and take a look at their diamonds for example, all of them have bscope reports (note: we are a vendor for Superbcert, just to offer full disclaimer). visit www.gemex.com to learn about how that instrument works.

In summary, there is no perfect diamond cut, and even two H&A cuts will vary in their total light return and hence beauty, but you will find that names like Hearts on Fire & Superbcert (both of whom cut and sell H&A rounds) and Eightstar are typically considered among the most perfectly cut diamonds.

I'm sure others will also offer other brand names and also generic H&A's that can be considered among the best cut diamonds, but hope the above is a starting point for your research!
