After talking to different people and visiting different sites...it's almost like each source has a slightly different opinion. So, here are my basic questions:
1) So, I have been reading about the various certifications (GIA, AGS) and
learning about those. I have been at a few jewelers and I keep seeing that
they have thes
IGI certification/appraisals--Are they just as reliable?
The jeweler was trying to convice me that they are rated by 3 seperate
appraisers within the IGI and they are very accurate--is that true?
2) What about the guarantees that the stores offer for lifetime
replacements? (Ie, that if I get my diamond ring checked every 6 months
they will replace the diamond or ring if any flaws or other problems
occur) I would like to buy on the Internet--but that seems like a big
drawback for me. How likely is it that a diamond would need replaced?
Well, any advice or help that you can offer me for this big purchase I
would appreciate...thanks!

I would stick with GIA or AGS on the lab report as they are the most stringent laboratories. You will notice that they are not appraisals.
The IGI appraisals that I've seen were way over inflated which means that you would be paying extra premiums for insurance.
On in-store warranties, beware of the fine print that doesn't cover mysterious disappearance or abuse.
Mysterious disappearance is if you lose the diamond
Abuse is if you hit the prong or wear on the mounting.
If you insure the ring it is covered for that.I would send it to an independent appraiser,( someone that doesn't sell diamonds and jewelry) for
an appraisal.
One of the more reputable appraisers that does a lot of appraisals for on-line consumers is Dave Atlas at:
