Greetings,
Can anyone tell me what ring resizing is? Is it cutting out a piece of the ring? Is it preferable to using a ring guard? Is it a routine procedure? Does it cost $$$?

Regards,

Joel

Hi Joel,
Ring resizing (sizing larger or smaller) involves cutting the bottom of the ring. For making it larger, you spread the ring and put in a new piece of metal to hold the new size. For sizing down, you cut out a piece of metal at the bottom and pull it together. You then solder/weld the ring back (one joint for sizing down, two for sizing up) and polish it back to it original polish.

Resizing is usually preferable to a ring guard, unless the new ring size is viewed as only temporary. Resizing is a very routine procedure.

Sizing costs vary from free if its sizing a new ring purchase for you to hundreds of dollars if you are resizing a ring that has side diamonds or intricate setting work. If you resize a ring with side diamonds for example, you often have to pull the diamonds out, size, then reset them to avoid breaking them. Resizing platinum rings will cost more than gold ones.

Hope that helps!
