Just starting out here the more I reasearch the more I am hesitant about buying. My question is what out of the 4c's can you go alittle lower on and still have a great diamond.

Regarding the 4C's, I would rank Carat as least important (seriously, its far better to have a beautiful small diamond than a fat, dull, yellow one anyday). My *personal opinion* (I'm sure others will disagree but this is how I see it anyway) on how to rank the 4C's is this:

#1 most important is Cut. 98% or more of a diamonds beauty will depend on how well cut it is.

#2 Color - you don't want to have obvious yellow in the diamond, if possible stay in the D/E/F range except for smaller (under .50ct) stones where H or under is fine.

#3 Clarity - VS or better preferred. Look at SI stones on a case by case basis. You can find some beautiful SI grade diamonds, but you have to do a bit more looking at these (who graded it SI, where are the inclusions, etc.)

#4 Carat size - I honestly feel this is the least important. Most customers seem set that they are going to buy a 2ct. diamond no matter what, and so as a result they get a really ugly (but its a 2ct!) diamond. I really feel thats the completely wrong approach - you buy diamond because of their scintillation, fire and brilliance, so why don't you buy a diamond that captures that beauty even if your budget forces you to get a smaller diamond. The better cut a diamond, and hence more sparkly, etc., the more the diamond cutter wasted of the initial rough - thus a 2.50ct rough could (hypothetically) be a 1.15ct regular round, a 1.00ct ideal, a .90 AGS-0 or a .80 H&A. Same diamond rough just cut to different level of beauty (thats the quick answer for why are better cut diamonds smaller but still as expensive or more expensive than larger but more poorly cut ones).

Anyway, thats my opinion only but i would encourage you to focus and learn on cut and thus diamond beauty, most of all. Worry about Carat size and clarity least.

Hope that helps!

Buy a fine cut!
Buy VS or maybe an SI as stated before.

But I think you may find color a bit over-rated. Go compare a F color to say a H color in a face up position or in a ring. You tell us what you think about the difference vs. the price.
