Hi everyone,

I've been looking for a diamond for the last 2 months. I've been looking on-line, tried chains like Jared, and Ross Simons, and also couple of local stores.

I was looking for something 1.50-1.75 in size, H-I in color, and SI1-SI2 in clarity with an excellent cut, and definitely a GIA cert.

I saw many stones, but finally found one that fits all my criteria (except the color) The stone is GIA certified, 1.67, EX-EX-EX, J and SI1, and has medium fluorescence. I've seen the stone and I quite like it. It doesn't look like a J, doesn't have any inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.

The price is $12,000 (was 12,500, but they've come down by $500). So, I was wondering was you experts think about the price quality ratio for this stone? I'm very positive about this stone, but still would appreciate your opinion.

The GIA cert # is 6137103004 by the way.

Thanks a lot!
David

When it comes to "is this a good price" we're always going to basically tell you to plug in the basic info into the Diamond Finder tool at the top of the page, and make sure you're in the right range. The good thing is, you're in the range, pretty much--a hair above what my search is turning up, but that's not unusual for a brick-and-mortar store to be a tiny bit pricier for the same thing AND you have had the advantage of seeing it in person and making sure you like the appearance, rather than having to spend the money on shipping and kinda buying it up front (renting it, as we could say) til you're sure you wanna keep it and then paying return shipping and insurance if you opt to not. I'd say if you're getting the setting from them as well, and they're not going to charge for setting the stone and sizing (if need be), you're getting a fair deal.

Thanks for your reply.

They're not charging for setting the ring and other things. I'm planning to get a simple classic tiffany mounting, and they're going to charge $1,000 for it.

By the way, I amazingly found the same stone on the diamond finder being sold by one of the online sellers. The GIA report number and everything is the same. I guess they did not update their inventory. The online price is $11,450. So, $12,000 does not sound bad.

Don't be amazed - it's quite normal, and probably the stone is owned by someone else still. It's on memo (sale or return) to your local jeweller, and the online retailer has it on the list that the wholesaler or manufacturer says "it's for sale". A bit like those eBay ads from people that also have a physical store: if the item sells in the store, it's no longer available online, but until then first come, first served.
