Not much to decide on... on paper. Especially assuming they are both the same colour and clarity

Can you see them? Together? Do they cost roughly the same? If they are at two different vendors, which one do you like best to deal with? Do their policies re: returns, trade-ins, resale, warranty vary?

Is it just me, or am I blind? Color? Clarity? You've left out 2 of the most crucial deciding factors in giving you advice on which one is the potentially better pick.

Also missing is symmetry, polish, lab assigned cut grade, fluorescence, lab identity, dealer terms, inspection date, product location(s), and price.

See thread title for highlighted parts. ;)

But true...the rest IS a factor in determining, more so the Cut Grade (that'll answer the inspection date thing--if it's in the last 3-odd years, it'll HAVE a Cut Grade) and fluorescence. If you say the price is about the same, it doesn't really matter the location and all that, as long as they're giving you a fair price for what it is and fair terms in case you want to return it (ie, 30 days or so, no restocking, only responsible for the cost of shipping and insuring to get it back to them)

PROVIDING, all other things are reasonably equal AND that neither diamond has more than slight fluorescence (which won't affect appearance in even a D) and I had the money for such a high Color and Clarity diamond, if I were picking for myself, I'd go with the .52, because I prefer a slightly larger table. But that really comes down to personal preference--if they've got Excellent Cut Grades, Ex Polish and Symmetry and are GIA graded as D IF--you really can't go wrong with either one.

Thank you so much for the help. For now I went for the .54, if I shouldn't like it I can still return it, but I hope it is ok. :)

Michaelbrand,

Congratulations. We look forward to hearing how it works out. :D

Laurie,

Product location matters both because of the style of dealer and shipping. If one or both are at a local store, that's importantly different from a location far away or, even more importantly, overseas. It also matters if they're in the SAME location.

Dealer terms and conditions vary a lot from one to the next and there are some real zingers that can get buried in the fine print.

Inspection date has to do with the lab identity but also concerns about condition. Both GIA and AGS have changed the rules on how they grade stones and there are clues that come from that date.

Congrats! :) And so glad to hear it and that you (both) came back to share :) (and feel free to post a picture if you'd like! :D We'd love to see it!) And I couldn't agree with you more about the ring vs guy thing. When you've got a great guy, a great ring is just icing on the cake. Pretty, sparkly icing ;)
