How can I tell whether the diamond is a true hearts and arrows? I saw some heart shapes from the viewer. But the grading report does not specify it is a hearts & arrows diamond. The report only has an excellent cut rating on it.

The only way that most people can tell is with the special "hearts and arrows" viewer, that is kinda like a kaleidoscope looking thing with (usually) red or blue foil inside, that set off the pattern--arrows face-up, hearts face-down. GIA will pretty much never indicate on the cert that it's "hearts and arrows" unless someone has asked to have it inscribed on the girdle. EGL will sometime have on their certs "H&A" or "Tolkowski Ideal Cut" or some other variation of the same. Really, the only thing it means is that the diamond has good symmetry, in that all the facets line up to make that pattern. Some people prefer it, but as far as I'm concerned, an Excellent or Very Good Cut Grade and VG or EX Symmetry, and you're golden.

I grade the H&A using the system from HRD, a lab in Belgium. As Laurie points out, neither GIA nor AGSL use it at all. IGI, EGL, CGL and a few others have grading systems for this but they are far from agreement with one another about what are 'correct' hearts and what are near-hearts. It's remarkably complicated and it's highly debatable how it impacts the customer but, if you care, choose your advisor and then follow their advice.

It's true, if you believe that it's true, if you don't have to convince anyone that it's true, by then in your heart it's a true hearts and arrows.B)

You would need to look under a special symmetry scope. Make sure that the stone has 8 well formed arrows and hearts. Each stone has to be looked at. Just because it is an excellent cut grade or ideal cut doesn't always mean that it is a hearts and arrows diamond.
