I don’t know a lot about diamonds, just that I will need onesoon and want to spend about $4000 to $5500 (Canadian) to get one. I have a familyfriend who I’ll likely buy the diamond from but I’m trying to decide which is thebest deal and if spending the extra money is worth it for one of thesediamonds. Here are my choices that are available to me, all 1 carat (These prices are in Canadian):

Diamond #1: $4600

- Clarity: SI1

- Colour: H

Diamond #2: $5000

- Clarity: VS2

- Colour: I

Diamond #3: $5900

- Clarity: VS2

- Colour: H

Any feedback is much appreciated.

There isn't nearly enough information to give you any sensible feedback.

0. What shape are the diamonds? Rounds cost more than other shapes...

1. Who graded the diamonds? Do they have a lab report, or is this the vendor's judgement? In either case, do you have any reason to trust the grade?

2. You have (provided) no information on cut - this is the largest determinant of whether the diamond will look nice or not.

3. There is a significant difference in price between 0.99 and 1.00 - are these exactly 1.00 carats?

A decent place to start for comparing prices is the Diamond Finder on this page. Even if you have no intention of buying from these vendors, they provide a fair amount of information on prices. However, the devil is in the detail, and before you launch yourself into price comparison and shopping, I would suggest you do some reading and research to understand what you are looking at and what matters to you (and your to-be-fiancée). Then come back to shopping by choosing first a vendor (many if not most stones are available to most vendors), and lastly the diamond.

Thanks for the reply, I forgot to mentionit a princess cut (already have the mount picked out) and would like a 1.00carat, but I’ll find out if these diamonds are exactly 1.00 or if they aredifferent. Thanks for your quick feedback :)

Yeah...there are so many other variables besides what you've given us that need known to give any advice at all, really. Try to get as much info as possible-down to nitty-gritty numbers and such, if you can, and flesh out the descriptions some more, and then we can help you more :)

First of all, make sure you have a legitimate lab report on the diamond from GIA or AGS. Friend or no friend, you need at least an unbiased opinion of the grade of the diamond from one of the above laboratories.
