Hi,

Thanks for all the advice from my previous thread. I did the smart thing and got out there and looked at stones instead of looking for sales on Amazon.

So after going to all those "friend of a friend" jewellers, I have been offered a .9 H VS2 Very Good cut w/GIA report and 14k white gold Tiffany style setting for $4500CND ($4640 USD).

I just wanted to make sure it's a good deal, or if I should keep looking. It becomes hard to tell is something is really a deal or not, when you do comparisons with some jewellers that state extremely high prices.

Thanks

If you search for comparable stones on the Diamond Finder, you'll find them at roughly that price (4200). On paper, it's an honest deal. The questions for you are:

1. Do you like the diamond? More than others? Have you seen a truly excellent cut stone, perhaps in I colour or just below 0.90 ct? Do you prefer this one?
2. Do you like the setting?
3. Do you like the service package that comes with it (cleaning, sizing, warranties, return terms, cash back, whatever else)?
4. Do you like the vendor as someone to deal with?
5. Is this the right price for you? Does it put you under strain financially?

If the answer to all 5 (or 8) is yes - except to the last one, perhaps ;) - then go ahead and buy. You have a good vendor (3 and 4) with an honest price (5) on a stone you like (1 and 2) with impeccable credentials (GIA H/VS2/VG). What are you waiting for?

If it were me, I'd still be tempted to go a little smaller and perhaps a little warmer in colour in exchange for superb cut. But perhaps this stone is already there: do you have the proportions and angles written down somewhere?

1. Truthfully? I liked it, but due to my inexperience I really wasn't seeing much difference between all the diamonds I saw.
2. The setting will be a standard tiffany style, regardless
3. Yes, yes I do
4. Nice guy, I liked him.
5. He worked within my budget. I didn't really try the haggling angle, just the "Here's my budget and I'm friend's with so-and-so, so can you give me a deal?"

I wasn't looking for the deal of the century, just wanted to make sure everything was good and that I wasn't going to be burned.
Thanks for bringing up some questions that I never really though about.

You are most welcome. Are you going for it? If so, would you mind posting pictures once you get the ring? It always makes us happy to see one more diamond.

All the best with the purchase and the proposal!
