I recently went into Jared’s near the Greenwood Park Mall for a wedding ring upgrade. I explicitly told the sales associate, Amy, that I was “shopping around” different stores and wouldn’t be buying a ring for at least a month (but more like three months). She asked if I wanted to know how much I would get if I financed through them. I filled out a form for a credit check- a form she specifically told me was for a credit check. Skip forward to a week- I receive a Jared’s Credit Card in the mail! In no way, shape, or form did I consent, or even desire, a credit card. I called the Corporate office and spoke to a nice lady, Debbie, that seemed genuinely apologetic about the situation, but informed me that the form I filled out has fine print that reads (not verbatim…but darn close) “by signing this application you authorize “the company” to the following, but not limited to…” then she rattled off six different things, including taking out a line of credit. When you’re told you’re filling out a credit check form at Jared’s they can use that form however they want-at their discretion…without your knowledge. The Greenwood’s store manager, Adam, was extremely rude and unapologetic. I honestly think this is a standard practice for them. Bottom line- Shady business practices and untrustworthy associates. BEWARE. This company (which is the sister company of Kay, Osterman, Gold Casters, ect. *meaning-they’re one of the same) does poor and bad business.

Side Note- Even if this situation didn’t occur, I’d only give the company/store two stars because the associates are extremely aggressive; I had two sales associates “tag-team” me and another gentleman. As mentioned above, I told Amy (and Amanda?) that I wouldn’t be buying a ring anytime soon- I received a phone call the next day asking if I had made a decision yet, then I received a letter inquiring about my decision.

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that happened. That is certainly over-zealous sales efforts. Following up is one thing, but that seems a bit like overkill.

I walked into a Jared's (San Diego, Ca) this past weekend and wasn't extremely pleased with the general vibe of the place itself, or the salespeople.

I was virtually the only person in there and the whole time I felt somewhat rushed to make a decision on what I wanted, and not to mention open a credit card account.

One of the clowns I dealt with had that "greater than thou" attitude, telling me how Jared's owns tons of other companies throughout the U.S.

These dudes are making about $8.00 an hour, and just because they're wearing a "nice" suit, they believe they're that much better/knowledgeable than someone who walks in there with a pair of jeans. Little did they know I'm on the cusp of purchasing an engagement ring (not that I'd buy from these guys, but I did see a solitaire setting which I really liked for a decent price!).

I'm not looking to get pampered when I walk into one of these places, but it seems like most, if not every, jewelry store I walk in has that car dealership vibe to it! Maybe it's the economy, who knows!

Seems as though Jared's doesn't get many great reviews, though...there's obviously a reason for that!

Jareds is owned by Sterling Jewelers, which is the US arm of Signet Corp, a large British outfit. Sterling also owns several other US operations, including Kays for example, and Signet owns operations all over the world both in manufacturing and retailing under a variety of other brand names but they seem to be especially heavy in the UK. Yes, Jared is their biggest division. I suppose this could be described as 'Jared owns some other companies', but that's certainly not the way I would describe it. I suppose it doesn't much matter, it's just puffery anyway, and who owns a particular store is largely a matter for the taxman. I just prefer when people are precise about this sort of thing.
