We ended up getting the platinum setting. I like the idea that when platinum scratch, it only disperse the metal instead of loosing metal like gold.

However, now shopping for my fiancee wedding band the jeweler told us that platinum worn away too. Does anyone knows anything about this?

Platinum will tend to furrow (displace) on impact rather than scratch or chip, but depending on the impact force and direction some metal may be lost. Same in polishing - it won't wear away as much as gold, but some metal will tend to remain on the polishing wheel. Platinum will last a lot longer than gold (particularly plated white gold), but it will eventually wear.

I have rings from the 1930s which are still in pretty good condition, though the metal wear on the bottom of the shank is starting to become visible. A gold ring with the same age and thickness would have been re-shanked a couple of times...
