Hello Forum,

I kinda did this backwards and have already purchased this diamond

I was wondering how does a consumer know if they paid a fair price for a FCD?

What should I have paid? ballpark

Impossible to say without seeing the stone. The fact that it is IF means it would have gone at a premium, but the real deal killer here is the colour. "Brown Pink" can mean the pink becomes darker with just a hint of brown, or it may have a definite brown tinge that makes it look "muddy". The price can vary by a factor of 50% on that...

The question about "how do you know if you are paying fair value" is an interesting one. The basic problem is that there are far fewer stones (and dealers) in fancy colours than there are for whites; this is then compounded by the fact that colour grades for fancy are rather broad, colour mixes make life more difficult, and the precise hue of pink (or yellow, or...) also counts for a lot but it is not described anywhere. In short, you are more than ever relying on the dealer's competence and honesty.

So hard to say unless you 1--see the stone and 2--deal with someone who deals in color. Us folks who really only deal with the D-Z range would be mostly clueless except to basically research in the trade to find out what the going rates are, and even that is hard to do, because there are so many fewer stones of color to check into in any given shape, size, and Clarity ranges. It'd be great if you'd post a picture of your stone, though--I'm a big fan of Radiants, and I just bet it's beautiful :)

...and just to reinforce what Laurie said, I'm here representing a firm that specialises in fancy colours. I'm no less stumped without seeing the stone...

Thank you for the responses.

Davide: brown-pink is a color I typically avoid, but for some reason I "had" to have this little guy. It was an emotional purchase which I don't do too often. I have purchased a few FCD's from this vendor and trust them. They provided various pics and have a great return policy. I find them to be honest and forthright.

Laurie: I added a couple pics. The black background really shows the diamond at it's brownest, but really shows the cut best. The white background shows the most accurate color in real life.

I would say I am a hobbiest. I have started a small collection of FCD to which this guy will go. As an amateur collector I am concerned about paying too much and that is where my question stems from.

I paid $2300 for this diamond, does that seem high? I am going to keep him for the collection, but if I did over pay I can at least use that as a learning experience and try to better understand from my mistakes.

It's at the brown end of brown pink (as far as I can tell from the photos and your description), but it seems well cut, and I think you paid a fair price, considering the very high clarity.
