My girlfriend likes the Cartier Tank engagement ring. Does anyone have a ballpark estimate on an approx. 1ct. before I make the trip? Thanks for the help.

Based on second hand prices, I'd say the setting is likely to be in the region of $2-3k new for 18k gold. The centre stone will vary depending on what you choose; knowing Cartier, the "bottom end" will be probably I-VS2, for which you may expect somewhere around $7-8k; if you went for a D-IF it could be 3 times as much.

These are guesses, though, and Cartier is unlikely to accept them as binding. ;)

Also - you may find lookalike rings for considerably less, or may get one custom made "inspired" by the Tank (where inspired may range from blatant copy to barely recalling some lines).

I think the Cartier folks charge more for their name than that. I would surprised if they have that ring with a 1 carat in it for less than $15k-$20k. They're fairly public about their prices though, all you need do is visit one of their stores and they'll be happy to quote you a price. Depending on how far the 'trip' is, I would recommend you take it anyway, no matter what your budget is. It may or may not end up being what you buy but if it's what she's asking about it's definitely worthwhile to see what the original will cost you and to actually look at it in person rather than just a photo online.
