Found a rock down by an old pyrite mine. I want to know if it's a diamond. The only reason I think it is,,,a man found a yellow rough diamond down by the pyrite mine a few years ago, They determend it was worth $50,000.

There is no way to know if it is diamond unless you test it. If it is in the rough, the only way you're going to tell is if you see "naturals" on the surface of the diamond under a microscope or have someone use a diamond tester on it. I'm not 100% on this, but I believe you will need a flat surface to use the tester. I'd find someone in your geographic area who is an expert on such things and can identify it in its rough form. (That or you could try to scratch another diamond with it, which I don't exactly recommend)

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you :)

mostly, testing is pretty easy. Jewelers and pawnshops have a thermal conductivity tester that should work pretty well. I do have a question though. WHO declared an uncut yellow diamond from an upspecified pyrite mine was worth $50,000 and what in the world did they mean by that?
