Keith(Mr. Weary),
I just bought a diamond from Dirt Cheap. Yes, it should work out for you fine.
I looked around at a lot of the major sites(Blue Nile, Mondera, Millenium, Ashford, Union Diamond, etc.), and this place was the cheapest and had a fine selection. I would have paid at least 15-20% more had I bought my stone at Blue Nile. Blue Nile does a lot of educating(God bless them for it) and has a slick site, but there are better prices out there.
I would say their service is decent as well. The people I talked to on the phone and via e-mail were nice and helpful. However, they were not as good as I would have liked when it came to communicating the status of the order/shipment, since they only responded after I contacted them. Otherwise, things went fine. The ring was indeed the ring I paid for, and it appraised for 44% more than what I paid for it.
My advice is this: do a TON of research. Knowledge is power. Once you know what is important, what you want, what you can spend, and price compare at the different sites, you can make an educated choice that you will be very happy with. I think I did well with DDD's, but check everything out for yourself. I think I now know more than most jewelry store sales people after everything I've looked over. I'm not an expert, but I certainly learned a WHOLE LOT. If you have any questions, I would be happy to help if I can.

I hear ya man. Did you go to www.pricescope.com's tutorial? Fabulous - jeweler's were asking me how long I have been in the business - with that "I know better" look. I researched for a month, the pulled the trigger.
Learning about diamonds (which are so expensive anyway) is key - and pretty simple.
I posted the specs of my stone on the Diamond Jewelry section (see the "Diamond education - continued" post). I got mine from www.niceice.com - terrific people with uncomprimising standards.
