Hi guys,

I recently bot a diamond ring (1.6 carat - in a platinum ring) for my wife for $15.5k from bluenile.com. She loved the ring and we were very happy with the bluenile service. We also got the laminated GIA certificate.

Should I get the diamond verified from an independent diamond specialist to make sure that the diamond in the ring is actually the one on the certificate? Bluenile is the biggest online diamond retailer and a public company, so I assume there will be no fraud involved. But I recently read a story where someone bought a 10oz gold bar (NOT from bluenile), but after testing it for purity they found that the bar from inside was made of tungsten which has the same weight and density as gold and it was just covered with a layer of gold. Since the price of precious metals and stones has increased so much in recent times, there is also an increase in fraud. Should I also get the ring tested to make sure its pure platinum?

Should I get it tested for $150 or not worry about it since its from bluenile?

Thanks.

There are an assortment of good reasons to get it appraised by an independent expert, including a minor risk that the dealer shipped the wrong item but BN is a well regarded company and your risk of this is quite low. The reason people get new things appraised is if they have questions about the stone that the dealer didn't answer, that they want a 'second opinion' on something the dealer said, they what a quality control step on the mmounting and the setting labor and they want proper documentation so that the item can be replaced in the case of a loss. FWIW, appraisers set their own prices and some, including me, are quite a bit less expensive than that. I tend to be on the high end around here and I'm under $100 on nearly every one of these jobs.

I agree with Denverappraiser--you are well within your rights to get an outside appraisal, but the chances of being sold something fake or even being sent the wrong thing are VERY slim when you're dealing with a reputable company such as BN. But peace of mind is worth something, so if it's worth it to you, go for it. If nothing else, then perhaps you'll have a more detailed appraisal for your insurance company :)

Hi Jimm,

It's highly unlikely that you didn't get what was represented. However, do have it appraised by a reputable appraiser. Give your City and State and someone will look up one close to you.

I agree with Neil, $150.00 is a little steep. $100.00 sounds more in line.

My sister-in-law had been looking for a while to have a ring made. She found BN and was very happy with the service they provided and had a three stone ring put together in platinum. It is everything they said it would be. Diamonds match up, beautiful setting, etc... I would still get it checked as others stated it would give you peace of mind.

Hello jimm,

Go for it! If this small amount could make you smile, so be it.
And after that you can totally be proud about that BN ring. B)
