Hello - Newbie here with a question. :)

We purchased a diamond the other day which we are seriously thinking of returning. It's a 1.5 ctw Princess Cut., H color, VS2. It's a Leo. In the store, the diamond looked beautiful. We looked at it under the scope at 10X and 30X and saw no carbon spots. In fact, it looked good to us. The symmetry was "good" and the polish was "good". However, when we left the store, out and away from the spot lights, we noticed what appeared to be an almost perfectly round circle of dark seeds or dots in the center of the diamond. In the brightest of light they fade, but in a regularly lit room, they are pretty noticeable - what is it that we are looking at in this diamond?

Thanks for your help.

First, try cleaning it. That may not solve the problem but it's ALWAYS the first step in diagnosing this sort of thing.

Other than dirt, dark areas in the stone are caused by the different reflections from the pavilion side or by a reflection of something in the environment (ie. If the ceiling is black you'll see a lot of black). I'm going to rule out the later and assume that you've looked at it in several environments and this leaves dirt and geometry. If cleaning doesn't solve it, go back to the store and discuss it with them. Then come back and tell us what they have to say. I can't tell you much without seeing the stone or know a lot more about it but you should not be seeing spots in a VS2 and, in any case, you should not have a brand new stone that you're unhappy with.

It sounds like you're seeing something which is being reflected within all the facets. This can happen for inclusions, sometimes dirt, sometimes something with the setting if it's making contact--but if cleaning doesn't make it go away, even if you were comfortable with what you saw when magnified, if looking at it with your naked eye makes you uncomfortable with your selection, definitely make the switch. Also, sometimes people see a dark spot in the center--that's usually the culet (a facet on the very bottom instead of a point), but it doesn't sound like that's the case here.

I'd say bring the ring back, have them give it a good cleaning, look at it again inside the store and outside and sitting in your car before you leave, and then make the final call. But do it soon--often stores are going to have a time limit for return or exchange.

Good luck and happy hunting (if you need to do it)

Denver and Laurie - Thanks for your responses. We will take it back to the store to see what they say.

No problem. We're glad to do it. Keep us posted on how it works out! (and post a picture in "show us your bling" and well...that! :) )

Sometimes there is contrast in the diamond, however if it is a stone that is bothering you, by all means return it. A 1.50 ct. is generally pretty expensive.
Here is a photo of one that we have , for comparison purposes, that is a VS1 H that is a real stunner. It's a beauty in all kinds of light as well.

And a video of it.

Thanks, it is probably a few thousand less than the one you are returning as well. It is available for purchase and you could have quite a bit left over for a honeymoon. :)
