Hello, I am a rookie and I don't have any experience with diamonds. I need an engagement ring by this coming Valentine's day. My girlfriend is in love with the significance solitaire by hearts on fire. However, I think they are over-priced and that I can find a similar ring for a better price. Any suggestions as to where I can find the best deal for my budget is greatly appreciated! thanks!

Ring size: 3.75
Shape: round
Carat: 1.5
Color: D-G
Cut: Ideal/signature ideal
Clarity: IF-VVS2
Symmetry/polish: excellent
Budget: $20,000 (including the setting....pref. platinum/vintage)

Wow. Happy to help you shop, but that's gonna be one heck of a big diamond on such a tiny little finger! Are you sure you've got her ring size correct?

Btw...that's PLENTY of time to be looking, so don't sweat it :)

I bought her a promise ring/band a while back and it was a size 4. It fits okay but I can easily get the ring out of her finger. Since there's going to be a rock in the middle, it probably would not be centered/balanced all the time that's why I want it to fit a little tighter. I was thinking maybe a 3.5 might even be better?

I've been saving up for a long time for this ring so I want to start looking now and not wait until last minute.....I also hear that diamonds gets more expensive around christmas and val's day...true or false? /=

When demand is buoyant people are less prepared to negotiate their prices down, and getting hold of things may be more difficult, so your options are more limited and may drive you to a more expensive but better stocked shop. I haven't heard of or seen people deliberately pricing things up - although there was this funny bit of news on Christmas goodies been more expensive early on...

Hi dinie4147!

Welcome!

I think size 3.75 is just right.

Click our Diamond Finder & Find My Jeweler tools.
You should check out the nearest recommended Jewelry shops,
The way it see it, hearts on fire +++, vintage setting +++
and then your preferred specs., you need to tweak something, lower carat/colour/clarity.

Keep us posted :)

Hi Dinie4147!

You are certainly right about being able to get a setting similar to the Hearts on Fire setting at better value. I found one we can do that I will post pictures of. Also, here are a few diamonds in your specifications that we have too.

Is there a reason you chose a high clarity and color? Value wise, you can get a VS1 G or H that looks similar to a F or G VVS1. The only way to see the clarity difference is under a microscope. You can save a little by going with VS1 versus VVS1. Also, G or H color diamonds will face up white, especially in a platinum setting.

If you have any questions or need help finding the best value for your money you can email Jan at info@dbof.com. We specialize in custom engagement rings. :)

Hi Britani17!

Thank you for the post. I actually like the 1.4 ct better than the 1.52. The reason why I want to stick with high clarity and color is b/c she specifically said she wanted "quality" over ct....

Beware of one thing - the one attribute that will be visible quality above all else is cut. Clarity comes a very distant second in clarity grades SI2 and below. Whether colour should even be identified at all with "quality" is doubtful; it's a matter of personal preference rather than quality.

Bragging rights are quite another thing, and if one likes to say "my diamond is a D-IF", good for him (her).

Have you seen the Tacori settings. A lot of girls really like the vintage look of those.
