So now that we've somewhat recovered from the move itself, I've gotta pare down a lot! Anyone have some good advice on reducing? And throwing it ALL out, is not an option, so figured I'd stop the smart-alecs from the start

So the last couple weeks, I have been in the process of moving house. We stayed in the same area (about 1/2-1 mile from where we were) but moved to a nicer, but smaller house. We had a basement before, and now we're packed to the hilt in a house with no attic or basement. It's been exhausting, and I'm sure others have learned during their moves--somehow, we manage to carry a lot of stuff around with us.
So now that we've somewhat recovered from the move itself, I've gotta pare down a lot! Anyone have some good advice on reducing? And throwing it ALL out, is not an option, so figured I'd stop the smart-alecs from the start
Tips and tricks will be greatly appreciated!

Hi LaurieH!
Congratulations!
I'd say , treat your new home with respect, and solidly focus on RESPECT,
by then you'll have the courage to throw them all...
Cheers!

Hi Laurie - congratulations on the new home!
We have also just moved - though to a place roughly with the same size as the previous one. We went through most of the stuff, and threw away (or gave to charity) clothing that was not worn in the last year, books that we didn't want to keep (not too many of those) and a few oddments, but not a drastic down size.

I don't know if you've already gotten sick of the boxes and pared down enough in the last month or not...but I'll throw my two cents in anyway
A few years ago...I moved from a three bedroom with an attic, basement and garage to a one bedroom apartment. I feel your pain (and claustrophobia!) I simply asked myself what was more important-having a bright airy apartment in which I could really relax OR having "stuff". I decided to donate as much as I could. I found that the decision was easy and once I started going through things I realized that most of it had not seen the light of day in years. Most I was saving for this or that reason or imagining how I would use it when I had a house again etc. I easily got rid of a bunch of stuff that I really knew I would not use again--too old, wrong size, etc. I got rid of most of my holiday decorations--much less needed without a yard and the extra space! I also got rid of a bunch of books--hey the library is free and they store the books for free too! With most of the household items...I reminded myself that they were being wasted in storage when someone could actually be using them and that I need no longer selfishly hold onto them with the dream of someday using them.
I am now in the process of waiting to hear if my offer on a short sale has been approved and let me tell you...it feels good to know that I'll have less to move with this time and that I can purchase/decorate based upon the needs of the new house rather than based upon what has been sitting in my closet for 10 years!

It's very hard to throw away stuff, I agree.
However, it's easy to store. Grab those moving boxes and store your items, neatly labeling each box, and then neatly stacking them in a garage or storage unit. Make the boxes easy to manipulate, move, and store, that's the key. Use high-quality boxes, try to stick to the same size, make them stackable, etc.
Of course, as you're storing stuff, keep the trash bin (or a Goodwill box) handy and immediately toss anything you know you don't want.
Every ~5-10 years, repeat the exercise, tossing anything that has diminished below "keep" status with the passage of time.
There's no way to not have anything stored; that's part of our nature as humans. So, the idea is that you always have stuff stored away, neatly, in some convenient place, and easy to move if you happen to relocate, but the amount of stuff is roughly constant (new stuff replaces the old stuff).

Bonfire!!!!!
No, wait.. Salvation Army..
We will be moving in a couple years and I have already started getting rid of things around the house.. Making the move lighter and easier.. Of course I'm also hauling 7 cars / motorcycles with me so I'm not sure how light I can make the thing..

wow Feydakin! I'll take a bike off your hands if you want...
j/k
So...i've finally recovered enough to tackle reposting (or attempting to) my original post that got lost.
So, i was making some really good headway up til a couple weeks ago when things came to a screeching halt b/c I got the mother of all flus. I am still coughing, but it's finally ALMOST to the point I can stand it today--ie not hurting my neck and giving me a headache from the strain. It's been a miserable couple weeks!) I donated a TON of stuff to goodwill and did a good job of sorting out a lot of stuff before it came in the house. We had the benefit of a couple solid weeks of good weather and NO rain, which was SUCH good luck b/c we had really overflowed the house. So in our privacy-fenced back yard, i spent a couple days with the overflow boxes (which had been stored in the basement for the most part, and were forgotten but needed sorting) and layed out two tarps and they were keep and get rid of, and then also had a trash bag. The keep stuff was either put where it went, or with similar items, or just decided to be dealt with later if it was miscellaneous keep. The GO stuff was either for goodwill or garage sale. The garage sale containers came inside against the front wall by the front door so I could take them straight out the door easily (as opposed to going into the 3rd bedroom which is being used for storage) without having to wonder what was for what. I then boxed/bagged up a TON of clothes and misc stuff for goodwill. It amounted to nearly a full SUV load.
Then a few weeks later, a friend in my neighbourhood organized a clothing swap for the women--a ton of folks contributed and then we got together to "shop" for "new" stuff for ourselves. It was a total free-for-all but there was SO much stuff left, which we knew ther would be, and the leftover items were donated to the "closet" of a local women's day shelter, so this way, they can pick out stuff to wear to interviews, etc. There was some really great stuff in there that people donated. So i was able to reward myself a little for having gotten rid of so much stuff without having to spend any money on it, and def brought home MUCH less than went out. So overall--WIN. And I helped pack up the venue and took a full SUV load of clothes, shoes, belts and some toiletries to that shelter.
I'm still going through more bags and boxes with the move, and then--I had a garage sale. It was poorly attended, which was surprising considering the gorgeous day it was and the prime location I'm in--we're talking only like 10 people stopped by! But having already started to detatch myself from the things, i packed up about half of it for a spring garage sale, and the rest got--you guessed it--packed up for another goodwill donation! I kept about 8 boxes of stuff, and about 2 boxes of it is crafty stuff that I'm going to try to sell on ebay so I can be rid of it.
I still have half a room full of misc boxes--some pre-sorted, some not--and a couple more boxes of clothes that I havent even touched, but my goal is to have gone through at least half of what is there by the end of this month and start my new year with a lighter load--and maybe having discovered some of my floors! and maybe walls, too!
WISH ME LUCK!
