So yesterday, we lost our 4 legged old man, Oscar. He was a Rhodesian Ridgeback and he'd well outlived his breed. We didn't think we'd have him with us much longer, but besides loss of hearing and vision we hadn't seen any signs of decline. It was a shock and we are sad that we didn't have any warning, so that we could have spoiled him in his last days and had a chance to say goodbye. We still have our sweet kitty, Topaz, but we'll definitely miss having our goofy, flaky dog around. It was much harder on my guy, b/c Oscar had been his buddy for nearly 10 yrs, having gotten him from a rescue as a grown dog, and they went through a lot together.

Our pets can be very important to us, and it's sad when we lose them. Don't forget to dish a little extra love on yours (if you have them) every day!

I figured if anyone wanted to gush about their pets and share anything, here's your place.

I'm sorry for your loss, Laurie. I hope Oscar did not suffer. Our old man is 11, and probably has another 3 or 4 years in front of him; at least he is learning to enjoy the company of the new puppy, and it's a real delight to see them play together.

I'm so sorry to hear. I'm a dog-lover too (can't you tell?) and dread the day I lose my sweet yellow lab, which is hopefully far far far away.

My condolences... :(

I was just reading through the old posts. We lost our greyhound 9/8/10. We loved him so much. He went out to do his run in our yard and wouldn't come back. He broke his leg. We took him to the emergency vet - you ever notice everything happens when they are closed - this was also a holiday weekend. They wanted to amputate his leg and I was not sure what to do. Nothing was going to happen over the weekend so I said we would bring him home and keep him comfortable. We talked to our regular vet on that Tuesday morning and she referred us to a specialist. The specialist looked at him and started talking about surgery but also explained he had symptoms of bone cancer. We set surgery for the following day and he said he would call if there was anything. I stopped by to see my husband while waiting for my cell phone to ring and 5 minutes after getting there my phone rang. I handed it to my husband and he talked with the dr and he said it was bone cancer and it had spread everywhere. We had to put him down. It was very sad. He was only 6.

We still have two dogs - as you can tell I am an animal lover. It still feels empty without him.

I went to the pet store the other day and the greyhound rescue was there. They had a dog that looked just like him. The dog hated my dog. It was probably a good thing or I might have brought the greyhound home.

Laurie - how are you doing?
Did you get another dog?

Hi Maude,

Thanks for the condolences. Actually, no, we have not adopted another dog (or anything else, for that matter) yet, and not sure when or if we will. Matt has said that he doesn't want another dog, but I think maybe he'll change his mind down the line. I'm in no hurry. I'm a bigger cat person, my self, and a dog would be a lot of work to train, etc, not to mention having to puppy-proof the house, which I've never really had to do, and since I work from home, it'd fall on me most of the time. I think, perhaps, sometime in the next year or so we'll maybe get another pet, but there's no hurry. Oscar was his boy for a long time, and I think he needs a while longer to heal before he's ready to open up to another one. Sorry for your loss, as well. At least for both our cases, the end came quickly with little or no (presumable) suffering. I don't know how the people who have pets with long, drawn out (not to mention expensive!) illnesses do it. I think, all things considered, we came out lucky. Give your other two pups an extra squeeze for me :)

Well, I cannot resist posting this one. She was sitting down, in perfect pose and good lighting. I crept out, with the camera ready. And of course she saw me, and came to check what's that stuff that I have in front of my nose...
