Hi All

I am very new to here, and need some advices on the resizing the engagement ring.

I just got engaged recently, my fiance has gave me a very lovely engagement diamond ring. I love the diamond truthly : the cut, clarity, and size of the diamond are prefect.

Only 1 issue bothering me was the size of the ring, it was size 10, 1 size bigger than how it should be. It was the sale person to recommend to my fiancé to take 1 size bigger, even though my fiancé took the right size (one of my rings) to purchase the engagement ring.
The sale person also suggested during the sale to go for resizing if the ring doesn't fit into my finger.

And it was what we have expected that the ring is too big even it goes to my middle finger therefore we went back to the shop to get it resizes. However, the outcome of the resizing was disappointed. From the naked eye, you can see the bottom of the ring was uneven done, one point is thicker than the other, and a small curve of bend could identify too.

We went back to the shop again yesterday to get this fix for second time, and now my question is how bad is it to the ring resizing more than once? I am very worry on the impact to the ring, would it be easily bended/damaged after resizing twice or more?

Let's say it still doesn't look good after resizing, could I request a new ring that fit my size instead of going through resizing again? Does it incur additional charges for that? After all it was not our fault. From the professional's point of view, does it make sense? Alternatively, you may other suggestion?

I appreciate your advice.

Thanks.

Cheers
JJ

Hi Wondering,

With most designs, resizing several times is no problem. That's the good news. My bigger concern is that they apparently did a sloppy job the first time and it makes me wonder if they can be trusted to do any better the second. By all means discuss it with them. In terms of additional charges, that's up to the store but I would say no, you were acting on bad advice from them the first time and, at the very least, you are entitled to have them do it right along with an apology for needing to bring it back for rework. Again, my primary concern is with the craftsmanship already and the possibility that they may make it worse. You should not be able to identify that it's been sized at all beyond the change in size. No lumps, no thin parts, no seam, nothing. THAT'S the issue you need to address with them. By all means you are entitled to a new ring in perfect condition if that's what you bought, and if they can't deliver that then you should get a refund and go elsewhere.

There are a few designs that have limits in how much they can be sized. As with the above, this is a question for the jeweler or an appraiser who can actually inspect the piece. Can you post a picture of the ring?

Thank you so much for your quick reply, denverappraiser.

I agree with you that the workmanship is pretty not up to the standard accordingly to what they had promised during sale, I am having the same worry as you have, can they rework it in the prefect condition. I have triple doubt on that, on the other hand I could not think of any other better idea to get this fix further.

I could not believe this happened to me just less than a month that I have engaged, pretty disappointed. Here are some picture taken with my phone, as you can see the quality of the photos are not good but still the uneven part could still seen.

Cheers

Hi wondering!

Welcome :)

And Congratulations!

I can feel that you're so disappointed.
It all started with the sales person's bad suggestion, wondering why does she have to suggest a size 10.
When did you purchase the ring? How about their return policy?
Most jewelers offers a thirty day return and exchange guarantee.
In my opinion, as much as possible we girls doesn't want are e-ring to be touched, meaning what you are going through is indeed a dilemma. An upgrade after a year or so maybe, but for now, you should be ceasing its beauty.
Tell them that you are completely unsatisfied.
Don't settle for less. B)

Cheers

Hi and Congratulations!

Ok...so that all out of the way--to the heart of the matter:

Having been on the side of retailers, I can understand the salesperson suggesting getting the ring larger--nothing worse than popping the question and NOT being able to get the ring on the girl's finger! Conversely, if it's a little too big, I always said--hey...she could put a bandaid or a piece of tape around the back and still wear it a few days and show it off to friends/family before getting it resized. Now that being said, if your guy KNEW the right ring size, the salesperson really should not have insisted. I always made that suggestion only if the guy was uncertain and had a ballpark idea--usually something like having sized a ring he "borrowed" without her knowledge or putting one of her rings on his pinky and sizing that. Not exactly always the best way to go, but gives ya an idea.

As far as the question of "can it be resized more than once" --YES. the good news is, like one of the previous posters mentioned, that is possible with MOST designs (those without major embellishments or stones set on the sides far down the shank, etc) as long as you're not talking about major size changes or back-and-forthing too excessively. a few times over the life of the ring is no big deal. The best news is that because the mounting of your ring is not complicated, you should have absolutely no problems with having it resized.

Now as to the jeweler--it's gonna depend on their store's policy, most likely, but play really nice (attitude-wise) with that salesperson and, if you have to go above him/her, with the store manager, and have them make it right for you without any add'l charges. They should make every effort to make sure that their workmanship reflects the kind of quality that they want to project to customers and make sure that you have a beautiful ring that you're happy with. and I'm with you--the back of the ring should not be "wobbly" or uneven--it should look just exactly like the perfectly beautiful ring your beau presented you with, but that fits comfortably on your finger!

If the store needs a little gentle prodding, just ask them to consider that a happy customer will share their experience with a few people, an unhappy one will share their experience with at least 10x more! ;)

Good luck and I hope they make you right soon!

Congrats again!

Hi Laurie

Thank you for your suggestion, and comfort! I could not sleep well for few nights after sending the ring back for resizing again.

As I have not sending any of my rings for resizing before, so this is definitely a nightmare for me, yet that is the precious one! I understand this is not the salesperson's fault, just hope that the salesperson could really check the ring before calling me. The problem was the salesperson never check the ring after resizing for the first time.

My fiance and I did play nice when we having the discussion with them last week, after all, we had spend a few thousands of dollars in this ring, hopefully they can return me a ring that worth the money, and looking forward to wear the beautiful ring again.

Let's keep the finger cross that they can make their customer happy, then they will have whole Facebook people know about them, else they will get themselves dirty! XD

Laurie, I appreciate your response and the advice of being a nice retailer and a jeweler. I will update the outcome this week once I got the ring back!

Cheers
