Hey everyone!

I am interested in purchasing a 1.82 ct princess cut diamond. Price: $7500.00
The specs from the GIA report are:

Square Modified Brilliant

Measurements: 7.00 x 6.76 x 4.91 mm
Carat Weight: 1.82 carat
Color Grade: K
Clarity Grade: VS2

Proportions:

Depth: 72.6%
Table: 70%
Girdle: Extremely Thin to Thick
Cutlet: None

Finish:

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: Faint

This is from a local store Diamonds Direct. They showed me a bunch of different princess cuts in varying sizes and then also in varying clarity and color and I did not notice any real difference. I was told that the color grade being lower than J was not bad because the fluorescence helped create a more white look. My only real concerns are the price and the girdle. Any advice would be great!

I would agree that the K color isn’t ‘bad’ if you like the look and it does drive down the price in a big way, which is a good thing. It does affect the look and do make sure you check it out in several different lighting environments, not just the bright spotlights they have over the cases. Tiny details make a big difference in this business. Actually, my biggest worry is the ‘extremely thin’ girdle. That can be an important durability risk, especially with princess cuts and you should figure out what part of the stone it is. If it’s the corner (likely), I would pass on the stone for that reason.

In terms of price, that’s a good enough storefront deal if it’s the right stone for you but it’s not such a good deal that you should buy it for that reason. Actually, there’s never a deal that’s good enough to buy for that reason. First get what you want; second get it for a good price on it. There are LOTS of diamonds out there and there’s very little reason to compromise if price is what’s driving you to this one.

You can do better on price or quality You need to look at the stone under a microscope and see where the extremely thin is at. If near the tips of the stone it could be prone to chipping in the future.

My plan is to visit the store today and ask about the girdle. If the girdle is not thin near the corners I plan to purchase the diamond and have it appraised by an independent appraiser later today and will also have them look at the girdle.

Check out their return policy.
It's good to bring it to an independent appraiser on the same day
so you'll get to understand the stone even more...
I hope that you'll appreciate the stone when you actually see it.
When you get the stone, don't to forget post some pictures as well.
Good luck!
Enjoy! B)
