Hi,

I've been reading lots of posts for the past 3 days. i'mnot sure if i should be happy or mad just yet... I decided to register and provide "my" story. I purchased a loose stone (specs below) AND a hearts on fire setting from Diamonds International! I know there are quite a few diamond experts on this board. I welcome comments and remarks on what I should have paid for this loose stone.

From the title of your thread, I assume the grading is by EGL. Which presents a problem - EGL's unreliability. It could be a diamond priced about $2500 retail if it is something that GIA would call K/SI2 and it has visible inclusion; or it could be somewhere around $5500 if it is something that GIA would call I/SI1, it has no visible inclusions and is very well cut (which yours might be, but we don't know). Interestingly, the dealer was probably hoping for the second stone to be called H-VS2.

Bear in mind that the price you paid will also reflect to some (possibly large) extent the services that the vendor provides - or not. One of the reasons Blue Nile is very competitive on price is they provide virtually nothing apart from acting as middlemen between the manufacturer and the consumer.

Thanks for the reply David. Yes, it is EGL certified. And yes, there is an inclusion, which you can only see with the scope AND from underneath the stone when you take it off the setting. the appraisor said it could pass as a "H". its a beautiful stone. i just want to know how much someone would pay for it with the specs i provided.... did i not include everything?

I’m not understanding your concern. You bought a stone, presumably you've seen it and you love it, and you hired an appraiser who told you that you got what you paid for. I could ask the usual sorts of questions about the reliability of the lab, the reliability of the ‘appraiser’ and the like but none of that seems to be what you’re concerned with. Could you rephrase your question please? What, specifically, is worrying you?

I didn’t know DI was a HoF dealer but I can’t say I’m paying that much attention. A quick search doesn’t show it on their website. Are you sure about that?

it's easy enough to use the 'find online jeweler' button at the top of the page to search for similar things from the dealers who advertise here. EGL/1.00-1.01/I/SI1 seems be be asking $2400-$3000 or so. There are dozens available. As Davide points out, other marketplaces can vary by quite a bit. DI isn't usually a cheap place to buy stuff but there are other reasons people shop there. How much that particular stone should be expected to cost in whatever market it is that you're considering is exactly the sort of question you should be asking your appraiser. Isn't this what you asked them when you went in for your appraisal session? What did they say?
