Not really any cons other than maybe who is grading these supposed grades. Also, there is a range of SI1's some being more eye clean than others. Depends on your eyes which is the best way to evaluate a diamond. Make sure you get a reputable lab report like GIA or AGS. One other thing, is you can probably go with a lower color and still have the same apparent whiteness in a diamond for less per carat. Hardly anyone can tell the difference between F and G even when side by side. ;)

Thanks, so im looking at GIA only. what will be the difference as far as vs1-si1 goes in the long run? it does make a significant diff in $

A cynic would say that between a VS1 and an eye-clean SI1 there is only the difference that the former is much more expensive... in the short as well as in the long run. You aren't going to see less "depreciation" or greater appreciation for a high clarity diamond than you would for a good eye-clean SI (unless you are talking large stones)

Colour is a matter of taste, largely. Also, the difference between most colour grades and the immediately adjacent ones is tiny. F vs. J - easy to tell. F vs G or F vs E much much harder.

If you are looking for eye clean, I would say a VS2 G-H versus a SI1 F. One thing that I noticed with the colorless diamonds, is that their inclusions are generally dark in nature.

Pros: F color is better than G
Cons: SI1 is worse clarity than VS2

Cons: G color is worse than F
Pros: VS2 is better clarity than SI1

As you can see when stating the obvious, your question is doesn't address problems that are specific to a diamond purchase.

This first problem is diamond color and clarity are subjective values assigned by mortal humans.

To wit:
There isn't an Absolute "F" color.
There isn't an Absolute "VS1" clarity.
Color and clarity values occur on a continuum, like the hues in a rainbow.

"F" color is actually a 'range' from low 'E' to high 'G'.
Same with clarity.

Technically, your F-SI1 stone could be visually indistinguishable from your G-VS2 stone.

Once you factor in price, cut, polish, symetry, culet, table, depth, etc... the concept of comparing two stones by pros and cons becomes a fools task.

Your best course of action is to find a stone you like at a price you can afford from a dealer you can trust and don't second guess yourself.

Things to remember when shopping for a diamond...
1. A certificate is a piece of paper, not a certification of quality or value.
2. A Certified diamond isn’t. See #1.
3. A Diamond is a unique natural crystal, not a commodity that is reproducible.
