Hi everyone, I have been reading this forum and as a guy shopping for a ring, have found it very helpful. Thanks to everyone for their time and for sharing their knowledge!

I have a question about this ring --- princess cut, knife edge WG band. Is it just me, or do the top 2 prongs look different, size wise? Like the bottom right and top left look bigger and the bottom left and top right are smaller, tighter, closer to the stone.

I thought all 4 prongs were supposed to be identical, perfectly symmetrical. Let me know, and thank you so much for your help!

The ring will never be "perfect" because the jeweler who set your stone can't be completely exact and perfect on your ring. Also, it depends on how symmetrical the diamond is as well. The prongs may look slightly different, but nothing that raises a durability issue as far as the picture is concerned. Beautiful ring! ;)

Tough to say at this resolution, but yes, there seems to be a difference. However, as Britany says, you can't expect totally identical prongs in any case; FWIW, probably due to the angle at which you are taking the photo, the diamond does not look perfectly square either... (but it's a photo effect)

Thanks for the help so far. Looking forward to seeing if others have an opinion as well.

The stone is actually a perfect square: 7mm by 7mm according to the GIA certificate. So given that, does the setting look off?

Any other forum members with princess solitaire's they have pictures of?

My worry is that my GF will see the top 2 prongs and their being differently shaped will catch her eye even more than the stone! Thank you again to everyone for their help!

Hi there - the point I'm trying to make is that you are looking at a fairly complex surface, and a small change in the angle of viewing (or of movement of the ring) can produce rather different results. I am sure the diamond is perfectly square - not only equal sides, but also 90 degrees angles, yet due to the angle of the picture, the top side of the stone looks tilted (to my eyes, at least). For the prongs, it's the same; in the photo, the bottom two look smaller, and in fact the top left seems larger than the other three, but I don't know how much is due to the photo angle and the surfaces being slightly different thus catching the light in a slightly different way, and how much is "real".

Have you got the ring? Can you regularly identify two "smaller" prongs" and two "larger" ones? Are they always on the same side?

Incidentally - I don't think she'll catch up on the differences. She'll be thinking of other things... ;)

The picture isn't enough information to tell but in any case, talk to the person who set it and sold it to you about your concerns. *IF* there's a problem with your prongs, it should be a fairly straightforward job for them to deal with it.

Take a deep breath.
Diamonds are set by humans, not machines.
You should Always expect a variance, especially with sharp cornered shapes like your Princess.
Sharp cornered stones are notoriously difficult to deal with due the the possibility of snapping one of those corners during the setting process. I agree with the other posters - If you aren't happy, take it back, express your displeasure and give the jeweler a chance to get it closer to your expectations.

Good Luck
Things to remember when shopping for a diamond...
1. A certificate is a piece of paper, not a certification of quality or value.
2. A Certified diamond isn’t. See #1.
3. A Diamond is a unique natural crystal, not a commodity that is reproducible.

Hi srs144

You've got a very lovely ring and honestly, I'm only noticing one slightly different prong on the upper left part. ;)

The stone looks so polished and refreshing all at the same time so just embrace the imperfection.
Note : Just don't tell the her about the prong thing, ayt? and if it she did noticed it, that would be just fine. We don't expect 'a guy shopping for a ring' to get all the details., 'shopping for us' is enough.

Keep us posted :)
