Hi -

I have tried searching, but cannot seem to find an answer to this question - I am looking at buying a 0.5 carat VS G color round diamond to replace a garnet stone in a necklace setting. I am definitely on a budget, and am looking at this loose diamond because it has a chip. The jeweler told me it was chipped when they tried to force it out of the ring setting it was in. He said the chip would be barely noticable once the diamond was remounted. He said there was no real risk of the diamond chipping/cracking further, especially since it was going in a necklace which would have a lot less wear and tear than something like a ring setting.

Any thoughts? I am okay with there being a small chip that was slightly or barely noticable in the necklace - I just want to make sure it will not chip/crack any further? Also, would there be any risk with it chipping further when remounting it? Thanks!!

I am attaching a picture of the necklace with the garnet stone I am replacing.

There's nothing wrong with buying a chipped diamond if both you and they are aware of the issue and if it fits in your setting although this should have a serious impact on the price. How much are they asking for it?

Yes, there's some risk during the setting but it shouldn't be too bad in a prong setting in a pendant. By all means, include setting it without further damage as one of the requirements of the deal. After it's mounted it's unlikely that you will damage it further.

Thank you!! They sent me some pictures of the diamond so I am uploading them. What do you think of the size of the chip? Will it be noticable?

They are asking for $175.

Thanks - I really appreciate all your help!

Judging from the pictures, it seems to have taken away a sizable portion of the girdle (the shape is no longer round). Unless you are planning to replace the current claw setting with a bezel (enclosing the stone completely), it may be quite visible.

At the end of the day, what would bother me is the thought of the chip even more than its visibility...

My guess is that if someone looks closely they'll see the chip but that under 'normal' viewing conditions it will go unnoticed. I can't help but wonder how likely it is for someone looking at her chest to notice a microscopic chip underneath one of the prongs on one of the diamonds. I guess it depends on what sorts of people you're around. The price sounds reasonable for most markets, especially if it includes the setting labor and they'll guarantee against further damage in the setting process.

If you are going to buy something new to you don't you want it to be right? I mean there is no reason you couldn't get a diamond that isn't chipped put into your necklace. Why settle? Besides is the jeweler cutting some of the cost off the stone as well or trying to sell it full price as if it weren't chipped? There are enough diamonds out there for a great value. You don't want to start off with a slightly damaged stone risking further damage. Besides how do you know the stone is even the quality you want, meaning clarity and color and cut?
