The ring is being shipped to me this week. Now I need to get it insured. My homeowners insurance is through USAA. I went to their website and got a quote for a premium of $68.

The ring cost me $8400. Should I get it appraised first, then get it insured? Where can I go to get it appraised in Charlotte NC?

Sorry Scabbed, I don't know anyone in Charlotte. I was hoping someone else would answer. Yes, you should get it appraised, in fact I suspect USAA will require it.

You can find appraisers at:

www.ags.org
www.najaappraisers.com
www.isa-appraiser.org

I would say the appraisal before the insurance, since the insurance should reflect the appraised value if it appraises for more than what you paid. In this way you will receive adequate insurance.

To do it the other way around, puts the proverbial "cart before the horse".

My two cents.

Best of luck with everything!
