I found a clear stone on beach in central america(the beach was volcanic). I have not been able to figure out what it is other than i think it is a diamond. It is mostly clear but has a white calcium substance around the outside. I took a dremmell and was able to get the white part off with a stone burr but it will not scratch the clear part. I have not been able to put a scratch in the clear part with anything. It will etch glass very easily. It is about the size of the tip of my thumb. Any suggestion on what it is and any more tests that I can do to it before i take it to a jewler and embarass myself.

;) I would say go ahead and "embarrass yourself"! I put that in quotes because I don't think there's any embarrassment whatsoever. Everything you've done indicates it may very well be a diamond, so this is the logical next step.

Good luck!

Don't let them say it's not diamond and then offer to buy it! ;)

How much does it weigh out of curiosity? Do you have access to a scale that measures accurately in grams? 1 carat = 5 grams.

For many years Brazil was a major supplier of diamonds. Alluvial deposits often get transported to the sea over time. Namibia's marine deposits (off the coast of West Africa) are among the world's richest. Good luck and let us know how it comes out.
