Greetings,

I'm in the market for a colorless V1/V2 1 carat marquise. I'm being picky, and I want an excellent cut.

I found a diamond that I'm interested in, but it has a medium blue Fluorescence.

How much would such a Fluorescence effect the look of a stone? How much should I care whether it has Fluorescence or not?

Any info appreciated.

Stan

Sragan,

Medium blue fluorescence really should have no effect on the look of the stone. The only concern in fluorescence is when you are looking at a "colorless" (ie. D,E,F) stone, and it has very strong fluorescence, it may give the stone a milky appearance under certain lighting conditions. To get comfortable that there is no effect, view the stone under all types of lighting conditions, including bright daylight and let your eye tell you.

As long as the fluorescence doesn't effect the clarity of the stone, for instance milky or hazy fluorescence you shouldn't worry. We recently had a diamond with strong blue fluorescence and it was one of the highest performing diamonds, that I have seen on the brilliancescope. The brilliancescope shows how the diamond performs under various lighting conditions. Brilliance is for white light, Dispersion is how the diamond breaks the light into the spectral colors and scintillation is how the light plays off of the diamond. It is interesting to note that recently we found diamonds that didn't seem to have the numbers that everyone is touting to be some high performing diamonds. What do you buy a diamond for anyway? To see sparkle right?
